Foodcycle in Sunderland - Reform Magazine
Churches in Sunderland are tackling hunger, loneliness and waste. Neil Sinclair reports
In Sunderland, the United Reformed Church has developed a close partnership with FoodCycle to provide free weekly three-course meals, open to all, at two of its buildings. At Stockton Road URC, the meals are at lunchtime on Tuesdays, attracting an average of 45 guests. At the Grindon Church Community Project there are usually about 25 guests for the meals on Thursday evenings.
FoodCycle is a national charity which aims to reduce food poverty, loneliness and food waste by offering meals with company. It is supported by other charities, corporate sponsorship and personal donations. The Sunderland venues are two of ten in the north east of England. Others are in Newcastle, Gateshead, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough….
